What is ambient mode on YouTube?

I was exploring YouTube’s settings and found something called Ambient Mode. I’m curious whether it makes videos look better or changes how the player appears. Can someone explain it in simple terms?

Ambient Mode is mostly a cosmetic thing for the video player, not a video quality upgrade. It samples the colors from whatever’s on screen and spreads a soft, blurred glow behind and around the video, so the page background shifts color with the content. It’s meant to feel a bit more immersive, especially in dark theme.

No, the video itself doesn’t go sharper, brighter, or higher resolution because of Ambient Mode. It just changes how the area around the player looks. It also works best with the dark theme on, and it can be switched off in the settings gear if you find the glow distracting. If you’re on a weaker device and notice any lag, turning it off can help a little.

Honestly, you probably don’t need Ambient Mode specifically. It’s purely a “looks nice” feature. It’s mainly useful if you watch in a dark room or on a big screen, since the glow softens the harsh contrast between a bright video and a black background and can feel a bit more cinematic. Some people also just like how it makes the page feel less flat.
