Is YouTube considered social media?

I realised I spend more time watching YouTube Shorts than scrolling Instagram or TikTok, and it got me wondering if YouTube is really the same kind of app. Is YouTube considered social media?

Yes, it would be correct to classify YouTube as a social media platform, though it is somewhat different from Instagram or TikTok. YouTube has some features that are typical of social media, such as commenting, liking, sharing videos, connecting with other creators, etc. In fact, especially with Shorts, YouTube resembles TikTok. So, I’d say it’s social media.

By definition, YouTube is a video-sharing or streaming platform, so it’s kind of a hybrid. Personally, I’d consider it social media, just with a stronger focus on video content.

Yep, it counts. It's got comments, subscriptions, likes, and Shorts, which is basically TikTok's format. It's just also used like TV or a search engine, so it feels different from Instagram.
