I’m completing an online financial application, and it requires a UK Tax Identification Number. I’m not sure where this information is shown. Can someone explain where I can find it?

How do I find my Tax Identification Number in the UK?

Hey there! This is a bit confusing because in the UK, Tax Identification Number (TIN) doesn’t always mean the same thing. It depends on what the financial application is asking for and your own tax situation.
If they mean your National Insurance number, you can usually find it on your payslip, P60, letters from HMRC, or through your GOV.UK account. If they’re asking for your UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference), that’s generally something you’ll have if you’re registered for Self Assessment or have certain business tax responsibilities. You can find your UTR in your Personal Tax Account, the HMRC app, your tax returns, or other correspondence from HMRC.
Read the application form carefully. If it simply says Tax Identification Number without specifying anything, don't guess. I’d suggest you check exactly what the form is asking for before entering anything. If it’s still unclear, ask the form provider which Tax Identification Number they mean.

In the UK you, individually, don’t get a Tax Identification Number. You will generally use either your National Insurance (NI) number or your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR).
Check your payslips or P60: Your 9-digit National Insurance number is printed clearly near your name on most official employer documents.
Log into the HMRC app: You can easily view and download proof of your NI number through your digital Personal Tax Account on your smartphone.
Review previous tax documents: If you are self-employed, your 10-digit UTR is located on your past Self Assessment returns, Statements of Account, or official HMRC letters.
