Can you get help with funeral costs?

I’m currently in a very difficult situation and need to take responsibility for arranging a funeral, but I am really struggling to figure out how to cover the costs. I’ve heard that the government or the DWP can sometimes help, but the eligibility rules seem quite complicated.

Yes, if you receive a qualifying benefit like Universal Credit and have a close relationship to the deceased, you can apply for a Funeral Expenses Payment from the DWP. For example, it covers essential burial or cremation fees, plus up to £1,000 for additional costs like a coffin or funeral director.

Key eligibility and rules include:
  • Qualifying Benefits: You must be claiming a qualifying benefit like Universal Credit, Pension Credit, or Housing Benefit.
  • Coverage: It pays necessary burial/cremation fees in full, plus up to £1,000 for other expenses (like funeral director fees).
Note: You must apply within 6 months of the funeral. Also, if you aren't eligible, your local council can arrange a Public Health Funeral if no one else can pay.

DWP Funeral Expenses Payments help people on qualifying benefits cover essential burial or cremation costs.
Yes, there is a point in checking and making sure that you don't end up doing everything on your own.

Depending on your location, there might be government assistance or assistance with an insurance provider, employer, charities, or community groups. Funeral Homes may also be aware of local programs.

However, the assistance available can vary widely and without knowing where you are I wouldn't be able to recommend a program.

Yes, there are times when you can find assistance in paying funeral expenses. It may be provided by government, insurance, charities, employers, religious institutions or local community groups. These options will vary by location and individual. Now if you are in this position, I would ask the funeral company if they knew of any local support services and then check government or charitable services?
